About the CA-5A II
The Nakamichi CA-5A II is the updated version of the earlier CA-5/CA-5A stereo control amplifier, designed as a high-performance solid-state preamplifier for two-channel systems. Building on the original Nelson Pass-influenced design of the CA-5A, the CA-5A II adds defeatable tone controls, two-way tape-dubbing facilities, and multiple gain options for moving-coil phono while retaining a fully discrete, low-noise signal path and short-circuit topology. It provides dedicated phono inputs for MM and MC cartridges, line-level inputs (such as tuner, CD and auxiliary) and tape loops, along with preamp outputs for connection to external power amplifiers. The unit was manufactured in Japan in the late 1980s, features wide-band frequency response (to around 100 kHz), very low distortion on the order of 0.002%, and high signal-to-noise ratios, making it suitable for audiophile applications. The CA-5A II is often paired with Nakamichi's PA-5AII/PA-7 power amplifiers and remains well regarded for its transparent, dynamic sound and robust build quality.
