About the TP 160
The Thorens TP 160 is a separate 9-inch medium-mass tonearm, not a turntable. It is a statically balanced, J-shaped radial arm featuring a newly designed, extremely low-friction vertical knife-edge bearing with magnetic stabilization for precise, low-friction tracking. The arm uses a removable SME-type headshell to support a wide range of cartridges and headshells, including integrated designs such as SPU-type pickups, making it highly flexible for cartridge matching. A two-part counterweight system allows optimal balancing and fine adjustment for different cartridge masses and compliances, positioning the TP 160 in the medium weight class for broad compatibility with MM and MC cartridges. The TP 160 is supplied as the standard tonearm on current Thorens TD 1600 and TD 1601 turntables and is also available as an OEM/aftermarket arm (e.g., DIN 5-pin version) for use on compatible turntable platforms.
