About the XL-55
The Sony XL-55 is a moving-coil phono cartridge using a round, non-iron-core armature and figure-eight generator coil. Its high-efficiency ring-magnet circuit produces a 0.2 mV output at 1 kHz. It has a carbon-clad, three-layer cantilever, a 0.3 × 0.8 mil elliptical solid-diamond stylus, and a 10 Hz–50 kHz frequency response. Channel separation is at least 30 dB at 1 kHz, and the recommended tracking force is 1.7 g within a 1.0–2.2 g range. The cartridge weighs 10 g and has a 40-ohm impedance. It is a separate cartridge rather than the heavier, integrated-headshell XL-55Pro.
