About the TA-ER1
The Sony TA-ER1 is a stereo preamplifier manufactured between 1991 and 1997 in Japan. It is part of Sony's R series and was designed to emphasize the fundamentals of amplification with high fidelity. The unit features a transformer-balanced MC (moving coil) input, ultra-low impedance MOS FET Direct SEPP output, and a robust construction with aluminum front and top panels to enhance sound quality and provide a luxurious solid feel. It includes multiple inputs such as balanced CD, balanced line, and phono inputs for both MM and MC cartridges. The TA-ER1 offers very low total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.003% for MM and line inputs and less than 0.005% for MC input, with a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz (+0 to -1.0 dB). It has excellent channel separation of more than 110 dB and a maximum output voltage of 20V on balanced pre-out. The preamplifier weighs about 19.5 kg and measures 47 x 13.5 x 42 cm. It operates on AC 100V, 50/60Hz with a power consumption of 45W. The TA-ER1 was supplied with a wireless remote controller (RM-ER1) powered by two AA batteries. It is no longer manufactured and is considered a vintage high-end preamplifier with a reputation for exceptional sound quality and build.
