About the BX-100
The Nakamichi BX-100, produced circa 1984-1987, is a 2-head, single compact cassette deck positioned as an entry-level model that retains much of Nakamichi's higher-end transport and electronics design. It uses a 4-track, 2-channel stereo configuration with a tape speed of 4.8 cm/s and employs one record/playback head and one erase head, driven by separate reel and capstan DC motors. It supports Type I, CrO2, and Metal tapes and provides Dolby B noise reduction for improved signal-to-noise ratio. Frequency response is specified at 20 Hz-20 kHz (with Metal tape), with a signal-to-noise ratio around 62 dB (Dolby B), wow and flutter 0.06% (WTD RMS), and THD typically at or below 1.0% depending on tape type. The deck includes a mechanical tape counter, Dual-Speed Master Fader control, and auto-repeat function, omitting output level controls to keep the design simple. The unit measures 430 x 110 x 250 mm and weighs 5.5 kg, and is widely regarded as an entry-level Nakamichi whose sound quality rivals or exceeds that of more expensive decks, though its transport mechanism often requires servicing with age.
