About the Tympani-IVa
The Magnepan Tympani IVa is a three-way planar magnetic and ribbon tweeter speaker system introduced in 1985 and produced until 1991, with 452 pairs made. Each channel consists of three 16" wide by 72" tall by 1.5" deep panels: two bass panels and a third panel housing the midrange and a 5-foot tall ribbon tweeter. The panels are hinged together but the midrange-tweeter panel can be positioned separately for optimal sound. The system uses an external crossover box between bass and mid-tweeter panels, with an optional XO-1 passive crossover for bi-amping. It has a frequency response of approximately 30Hz to 40kHz, nominal impedance of 4 ohms, and recommended amplifier power of 100 to 300 watts. The speakers weigh about 106 lbs each and measure about 6 feet high by nearly 6 feet wide when assembled. The Tympani IVa was originally It was refurbished by Magnepan in 2005 with new tweeter ribbons installed. The design is noted for its large, flat-panel aesthetic with wood trim and cloth grille options.
