About the R117
The Luxman R-117, manufactured between 1987 and 1990 in Japan, is a powerful stereo AM/FM receiver known for its clean, detailed sound and robust 160 watts per channel output into 8 ohms. It features a 5-gang varactor MOSFET FM tuner with automatic hi-blend circuitry, CAT tuning, and 20 AM/FM random access memories. The receiver supports multiple audio sources including phono inputs for both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges, line-level inputs for CD, tuner, tape, and AV audio, as well as composite video switching for up to three video sources. It includes a multifunction remote control (RR-117), tone defeat switch, 3-position loudness control, and signal processor jacks for external equalizers. The amplifier section uses a differential dual FET input stage and push-pull driver with dual paralleled output transistors, providing high dynamic headroom and low distortion (0.03%). The unit measures 438 x 139 x 424 mm, weighs 15.2 kg, and has a black finish. It is regarded as a "monster receiver" from the late 80s, combining high power, excellent tuner performance, and versatile connectivity, making it a sought-after vintage HiFi component.
