About the Evolution 202
The Krell Evolution 202 is a reference-level stereo preamplifier from Krell's Evolution series, introduced around 2006. It employs a two-chassis design separating the audio circuitry from the power supply to minimize noise. Key technologies include a 1-1.5 MHz open-loop bandwidth with zero feedback, balanced Krell Current Mode gain stages, CAST (Current Audio Signal Transmission) inputs/outputs, and a 16-bit balanced resistor ladder volume control. The power supply uses a 170 VA toroidal transformer, quad-rectified with 39,600 µF filter capacitance, plus a separate 90 VA transformer for digital controls. It delivers exceptional transparency, resolution, and dynamics, praised in reviews for its uncolored, spacious sound. The Evolution series has been discontinued following company changes.
