The Esoteric C-02 preamplifier is a high-end audio component designed with a dual mono architecture that separates left and right channels with dedicated power supplies to eliminate mutual interference. It features Esoteric's Quad Volume Control System (QVCS) that adjusts gain in four circuits for precise volume control and channel balance. The power supply uses five transformers dedicated to left and right audio circuits and the control section, housed in a 5-part double deck chassis with a 3D optimized layout to minimize noise and crosstalk. The output buffer circuit, known as ESOTERIC-HCLD (High Current-capacity Line Driver), provides extremely high current output with a slew rate of 2,000 V/µs, ensuring dynamic and realistic music reproduction. The C-02 offers multiple input options including 3 RCA (one can be used as a signal through) and 2 XLR inputs, with RCA and XLR outputs that can be used simultaneously. It supports wide gain adjustment (+/-18 dB) and volume balance control (+/-6 dB), phase inversion per source, and has a display with dimmer and mute functions. The chassis is made of thick aluminum with a 5mm steel bottom plate supported by pinpoint feet, weighing 32 kg. An optional MM/MC phono stage board is available. The C-02 is praised for its ultra-realistic sound, tight imaging, quiet background, and detailed timbre reproduction, making it a reference-level preamplifier in high-end audio systems.
