About the DL-103S
The Denon 103S is an MC (moving coil) phono cartridge introduced in July 1974 as an upgraded version of the original DL-103. It retains the same output voltage, electrical impedance, and external dimensions as the DL-103 but features a lighter vibration system and higher compliance, resulting in better tracking ability and reduced distortion. The cantilever is supported by an ultra-fine steel wire with a one-point support system to minimize harmful vibrations. It uses a unique double-structure cantilever made of a special alloy with an elliptical diamond stylus smaller and lighter than 0.15 mm square, achieving a high resonance frequency around 60 kHz. The recommended tracking force is 1.8 ± 0.3 grams, lighter than the DL-103, allowing replacement without readjusting needle pressure if the same headshell is used. The 103S is known for clean tracking, light airy highs, and excellent performance on discrete 4-channel records. Due to its extended frequency response beyond 60 kHz, an optional pickup filter (PUF-1) was offered to reduce noise from ultrasonic components during demodulation.
