The Bob's Devices SKY 20 Step-Up Transformer is a precision hand-made transformer designed to match the inductance of a wide range of moving coil cartridges, boosting their output to be compatible with moving magnet phono inputs. It features proprietary 80% nickel mu-metal laminations processed for optimal performance at very low signal levels, resulting in extended bandwidth and low distortion. The SKY 20 offers switchable gain options of 1:10 (20dB) and 1:20 (26dB) and includes a ground lift switch to mitigate ground loops. The transformer is housed in a hand-polished black powder-coated cast-aluminum enclosure with gold-plated hardware and laser-etched lettering. Connections are resistance soldered using the American Beauty system to avoid heat damage to delicate wires. It is praised for its natural, organic sound with excellent presence and detail retrieval, making subtle nuances in vinyl playback more audible. The SKY 20 is not a standalone phono stage but is placed between a turntable with an MC cartridge and a phono preamp or integrated amp with MM input.
