Introduced in 1996, the Audio Research CD-2 is a reference-level compact disc player known for its exceptional musical resolution and smooth, harmonically rich, dynamic output. It uses a Crystal CS4329 20-bit double DAC in a delta-sigma configuration with full differential operation and balanced analog output circuits unique to Audio Research. The CD-2 features a robust 3-beam optical pickup with digitally controlled servo and a highly accurate CD-ROM drive mechanism with mechanical resonance control. It offers balanced XLR and single-ended RCA analog outputs, as well as digital outputs including AES/EBU (XLR), BNC coaxial S/PDIF, TosLink optical, and an optional ST-type glass fiber-optical output. The player supports 12 cm and 8 cm CDs, includes a wireless remote control, and has a frequency response of 0.1 Hz to 20 kHz ±0.2 dB, a signal-to-noise ratio of 96 dB (IHF-A), distortion of 0.003% at 1 kHz, and channel separation of 100 dB at 1 kHz. The unit weighs 7.7 kg and measures 480 x 134 x 298 mm (WxHxD). It is praised for low noise, gentle filtering, and excellent jitter reduction through crystal-controlled reclocking. The CD-2 is regarded as a musically engaging and highly resolving player that remains a valued component in audiophile systems.
