About the AN-S5

The Audio Note UK AN-S5 is a high-quality passive step-up transformer intended for moving coil (MC) cartridges. It converts the mainly current output of MC cartridges into a higher voltage, low current signal suitable for amplification by a moving magnet (MM) phono stage. The internal transformers are exclusively manufactured by Audio Note UK, featuring interleaved super mumetal 250 cores and 99.99% pure copper wire, housed in large mumetal screening canisters to minimize noise and interference. The transformer cans are secured inside the chassis with a solid copper clamp for optimal support. The AN-S5 is available in two standard versions to match cartridge internal impedance: AN-S5/L with 3 Ohm input impedance (primarily for Audio Note IO range cartridges) and AN-S5/H with 12 Ohm input impedance (for cartridges with 3 to 4 Ohms). It is recommended to use an input impedance about three to four times the cartridge's internal impedance for best results. The unit features an output impedance of 47K Ohm and channel balance of ±0.3dB. The fascia is available in anodised aluminium or black acrylic.
